INTRODUCTION
We repeat patterns both consciously and unconsciously.
We think alike. We act alike. We make similar choices. And often we end up exactly where we’ve been before, even when we swear that this time would be different.
The question is inevitable:
Why does this happen? Why can a person recognize a mistake, analyze it, suffer its consequences… and still repeat it?
The answer this book offers is both simple and profound:
We live within a system that favors repetition. A system where what has already happened is more likely to happen again than something that has never happened.
Not because the new is impossible. But because continuing along a familiar path requires less effort than creating a new one.
I call this the law of the Furrow.
Given two possible events, the one that has already occurred is more likely to repeat itself. Not because it’s better. Not because it’s right. But because a path has already been established.
At first, the path is barely noticeable. A repeated thought. An automatic reaction. A small decision. But every repetition leaves a mark. And when that mark is reinforced enough times, acceleration sets in. What once required effort begins to happen automatically.
The trajectory gains speed, becomes entrenched, and, if nothing corrects it, ends up dominating a person’s behavior, decisions, and ultimately their reality.
That’s why the problem is rarely an isolated mistake. The real problem is the repetition of the pattern. That pattern appears in relationships, finances, health, work, thoughts, and emotions—even in intelligent, well-educated people with strong analytical skills.
This book explains that mechanism—not from a traditional moral or psychological perspective, but through the observation of a structural principle: the tendency of systems to continue along the trajectory they have already begun.
Understanding this changes the way we view life. Because often the problem isn’t a lack of intelligence, motivation, or willpower. The problem is that a repeated trajectory ends up creating a reality that we later mistake for destiny.
And what we repeat for too long ceases to feel like a choice. It begins to feel like our identity.

State conservation
Most approaches to change are based on a mistaken assumption: that every morning you wake up in a neutral state, as if reality were reset to zero with every blink of an eye. They tell you what to think, what to decide, and how to act under the premise that your mind is a blank slate.
This is a fundamental error in physics.
The universe conserves state. In physics, chemistry, and dynamical systems, what has already happened leaves a mark that determines what will happen next. The past doesn’t disappear; it remains embedded in the system’s structure.
Think of a metal plate. If you apply a force and bend it once, the atoms in that area reorganize themselves. You’ve created a permanent deformation: a stored state. If you apply pressure to the same plate again, the metal won’t bend just anywhere. It will tend to yield exactly along the previous curve.
Not because that path is the best one, but because the structure has already registered a path of least resistance.
Your daily life works in much the same way.
Every repeated thought, every recurring emotion, every decision made over and over again alters the physical structure of your brain.
Over time, certain pathways become more accessible than others.
The system learns. And once it learns, it tries to reuse what it has learned.
That’s why so many attempts at change fail.
A person decides to act differently, but expects a new idea to be enough to overcome a structure that has been consolidating for years. They try to steer the system toward an entirely new path while the entire internal architecture continues to favor the old one.
It’s not a lack of intelligence.
It’s not a lack of willpower.
It’s not moral weakness.
It’s the preservation of the status quo.
The system always tends to reuse what has already been built rather than invest energy in creating a completely new path.
That’s why stopping the repetition of mistakes isn’t an act of motivation.
It’s a process of structural reconfiguration.
It’s not about thinking differently just once.
It’s about modifying the physical shape of the path until the new trajectory requires less effort than the old one.
That is the true challenge of change.
And it’s also the reason why so many people fail when they try.

Chapter 1: The Origin of the Furrow: Physics, Biology, and Primordial Inertia
Prologue: The Law of the Furrow
There is a principle that governs reality more persistently than any will:
The inertia of what once was.
Under the concept of “The Furrow,” a structural premise is proposed that dictates that, when faced with two possible events, the one that occurred first has a probabilistic advantage of happening again.
This premise is not a behavioral observation, but a principle of physical efficiency that transforms isolated acts into inevitable destinies.
The origin of the furrow lies in the economy of effort: the system favors probability over excellence, consolidating the familiar until it becomes a predetermined course.
- The Chemical Record (the Effective Reaction)
Life did not begin with a purpose, but with an inevitable reaction. Before thought existed, molecular affinity existed. The Law of the Furrow operates here at its most elementary level: if a chemical interaction between two molecules produces a structure that is more stable or capable of replicating itself, that interaction has generated a trajectory, a “success.”
Example: Imagine the first self-replicating molecules in the primordial soup. They did not “decide” to reproduce. Simply put, the chain that—by geometric chance—was most effective at capturing nutrients from the environment left a mark on the system. That effectiveness created the first chemical Furrow.
Matter does not seek perfection; it seeks the iteration of what works. Once a chemical reaction proves superior in its ability to persist, the probability of its repetition skyrockets.
The Furrow is, at this level, the universe’s preference for stability achieved through repetition.
- The Spiral of Duplication (the Learning Curve)
Once the effective reaction has become established, the force of recurrence comes into play.
Here, the Furrow ceases to be a passive imprint and becomes a vector of acceleration.
On the biological scale, this manifests as duplication.
The system that replicates most effectively not only adds elements but also multiplies its influence on the environment.
Example: The colonization of Earth by cyanobacteria billions of years ago.
These bacteria had no expansion plan; they simply followed the Furrow of a specific chemical reaction: photosynthesis.
Because it was an extremely efficient process for obtaining energy, the rate of duplication shifted from linear to exponential.
The Law of the Furrow dictated that, as the most likely method for success, it had to be repeated ad infinitum.
The system gained such momentum that the pattern of replication became unstoppable, propelling life toward every possible frontier on the planet.
- The Saturation Threshold (The Frontier of Success)
The final phase of the Law of the Furrow is reaching the system’s limit. When a direction becomes exponential, accumulated success eventually transforms the environment irreversibly.
The Furrow is so deep and moves so fast that the system can no longer slow down, even if the end result is its own extinction or a radical mutation.
Example: The Great Oxidation Event.
The very same cyanobacteria that triumphed thanks to the furrow of photosynthesis began to release oxygen as waste.
For eons, this success was their engine of growth, but the exponential acceleration of the process saturated the atmosphere.
Oxygen, which was a byproduct of their success, ended up being poison to themselves.
Here, the Furrow did not lead to an error; it led to a global change in state. The system collapsed for the bacteria, but that very collapse created the conditions that allowed for a new Furrow: complex life.
The exponential success of the Furrow always leads to a threshold where the original system must either die or transform.
- The Trap of Inertial Success
The saturation threshold demonstrates a critical rule of dynamic systems: a Furrow does not collapse because it begins to malfunction.
On the contrary. It collapses because it functions too well. The inertia of accumulated success is the blindest of forces.
A system saturated by its own trajectory cannot self-regulate from within.
It continues to accelerate in the same direction because repeating the routine requires less energy than processing change.
It systematically ignores the fact that the environment has already changed completely as a result of its own activity.
The Furrow, pushed to the extreme of its acceleration, alters the system’s boundary conditions to such an extent that what began as an optimal solution ends up transforming into a structural collapse.
- The Core of the Principle (and Why It Traps You)
Systems do not function like a container with its memory erased at every moment.
They function like terrain where every step you take consolidates a path.
In systems with feedback and structural conservation, previously traveled trajectories tend to stabilize. Previous states act like magnets.
Repetition requires less energy than innovation. Novelty demands additional structural work.
This isn’t fatalism. It’s structural economy.
What is spoken is imprinted.
What is imprinted is repeated.
What is repeated becomes destiny.
